Indigenous Health

Ganawishkadawe – the Centre for Wise Practices in Indigenous Health (GCWP-IH) at Women’s College Hospital is a leader in Indigenous health research. GCWP-IH conducts research that is relevant, meaningful and beneficial to First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

As a result, GCWP-IH’s work aims to address the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism and anti-Indigenous racism in the healthcare system. The research team fosters wise practices that respect Indigenous data sovereignty, promote rights-based approaches and community-defined priorities, needs, knowledge systems and practices.

GCWP-IH respects and leverages both Western methodologies and Indigenous research paradigms in their work in order to best support the advancement of First Nations, Inuit and Métis wellness. They are committed to ensuring that the knowledge work undertaken and supported meets the ethical expectations of their Indigenous community partners.
