Andrew Kouri, MD, PhD

Asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) are the two most common chronic respiratory conditions in Canada, affecting millions of Canadians. Though effective therapies and management strategies are available for asthma and COPD, a majority of people with these conditions remain poorly controlled, contributing to significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization across the country. Dr. Kouri’s research focuses on the reasons behind these care gaps, specifically looking into how we can leverage digital health technologies to improve the care of people with asthma and COPD.

During his doctoral thesis, Dr. Kouri explored how older adults with asthma and COPD use health technology, and how researchers can better include these older individuals in digital health research. Currently, he is leading work to establish an asthma and COPD digital health research clinic at Women’s College Hospital, where innovative technologies like digital inhalers, smartphone apps, and virtual support programs can be developed and evaluated to help people with asthma and COPD.
